Each year, millions of empty toner and ink jet cartridges are thrown into the trash, ending up in our planet’s landfills or incinerators. Recycling these empty cartridges is easy, profitable and environmentally beneficial. It helps reduce solid waste, conserves raw materials and the energy needed to produce a new product. Most cartridges can be recycled up to six times - they are refurbished, refilled, tested for quality and then resold to consumers at a lower price than brand name cartridges. Recycled cartridges produce the same quality and output as new cartridges.

Ink cartridges are constructed out of plastic, petroleum-based products and take about 1,000 years to decompose. According to recent estimates, 20-30% of ink cartridges are recycled, meaning 60-70% end up in landfills. The recovery and reuse of empty printer cartridges diverts millions of cubic feet of material from waste disposal, saving us the millions of tax dollars needed to pay for additional landfill management.

Its also a fact that producing new cartridges requires new resources to be extracted from the Earth. More energy is consumed in the process of making a new product compared to refurbishing an existing empty core. There are many positive aspects to using recycled ink and toner products besides just keeping them out of landfills which is reason enough.

  1. Now thats an idea. Actually making cash from throw aways. What a terrific fund raising idea, schools should get behind this idea, what a great way to raise cash from the students normal use of ink jets and toners as well their parents and their parents work environment.

In consideration of the value this process has for the envirtonment I would save my old cartridge and turn it in. This should be a universal practice.
